Does it ever feel like you're just "symptom chasing" with your clients?

Seeing progress then going backwards shortly after

Talking about organization one week and the next, rejection sensitivity (never getting far with one topic)

The client has trouble executing on what you discuss between sessions

A lot of time is spent in validation and not a lot of time for growth and change

Your clients aren’t stuck because they’re not trying hard enough.

They're stuck because standard approaches don't address what's actually driving their ADHD symptoms: nervous system dysregulation.

The first step-by-step clinical modality built specifically for the ADHD brain.

When you understand how to shift the nervous system, everything you're already doing works better.

ADHD Regulation Method

A step-by-step system to use with your clients

Nervous System Regulation

This is at the root, when your client's nervous system is in survival mode it increases their ADHD symptoms and makes everything harder.

Thought & Belief Regulation

Having a nervous system that’s been stuck in survival mode has created a lot of beliefs and ways of thinking that are also rooted in dysregulation.

Behavior Regulation

Behavior regulation is becoming aware of where dysregulation is affecting what we do. With this awareness we can then gently create behavior change.

"Every therapist or coach working with people with ADHD should learn this!"

A lot of advice I’d received in the past wasn’t effective for people with ADHD. It made me feel like even more of a failure, and ultimately stop attending sessions. What Jenna teaches really helps people ease some of that difficulty and reduce overwhelm.

- Jessica

"I have one woman I have been working with for over 9 months who constantly says how life changing this is."

What’s fascinating is that I work with clinical social workers and therapists who teach and understand regulation, but they have never seen it through this lens, and they are flabbergasted when they can interrupt the fight or flight response in their own lives.

- Megs, adhd coach

"This work has been fundamental to my recovery from severe burnout"

I can’t recommend it highly enough. I genuinely hope more ADHDers get access to this approach, because it has shown me that dysregulation doesn’t have to dictate how you live your life.

What You'll Learn

Phase 01 · the body

Before clinicians can shift a client’s nervous system baseline, they have to shift their own beliefs about what is possible for ADHD clients. A clinician who believes “this is just how it is” will unconsciously limit their client’s progress.

You’ll recognize this as

Cognitive restructuring (CBT)

How ARM differs

Same mechanics, different target. We are not restructuring a distorted thought about a stressful event. We are restructuring a clinical belief that the field itself has reinforced.

Clinicians cannot apply the ADHD Regulation Method until they can look at any ADHD symptom, behavior, or popular label and automatically ask: what is the dysregulation present here? This is a trained perceptual skill, the same one they will later teach clients.

You’ll recognize this as

Functional Behavioral Assessment, Internal Family Systems, Compassion-Focused Therapy.

How ARM differs

Everything is simplified and narrowed into how the nervous system fits into the picture. These strategies are a doorway to a regulated system and not the treatment itself.

Most ADHD clients do not live in fight or flight as a steady state. They live in a swing between two extremes. This is the dysregulation pendulum, and for most ADHD clients it IS their life.

You’ll recognize this as

Window of tolerance (Siegel). Hyperarousal above, hypoarousal below, optimal zone in the middle.

How ARM differs

The window describes where you are. The pendulum explains the highs and lows and the movement from one state to another. Framed in this way clients see that they are looking for balance and sustainability.

Every tool in the ADHD Regulation Method uses the same two steps: awareness, then interruption. It is always done as life is happening. Nothing to schedule, nothing to check off, never done for the day.

You’ll recognize this as

Mindfulness (MBSR, MBCT, meditation apps). Present-moment awareness of internal states.

How ARM differs

Mindfulness trains observation as the goal in itself. Here, awareness exists to trigger an action: notice, then interrupt. ARM focuses on in the moment awareness wherever the client is, not just in quiet, prescribed moments.

Phase 02 · the mind

Most of a dysregulated person’s time and energy is spent in thoughts about life instead of life itself. This tool gives clients a simple way to notice that and return.

You’ll recognize this as

Cognitive distortions and “should statements” (CBT, Ellis, Horney’s “tyranny of the shoulds”). Shoulds as a known distortion to be disputed and restructured.

How ARM differs

CBT argues with the thought: is it true, is it rational, what is the evidence? This tool never argues with the thought at all. It classifies the thought’s location and returns to the ground. Being grounded physically and mentally allows the client to create a new baseline, that it is safe to live here in the present with what is currently, physically happening.

Underneath a client’s moment-to-moment dysregulation is a story: a small set of beliefs they are functioning from (schema). Until the story is rewritten, it keeps regenerating the dysregulation faster than the other tools can interrupt it.

You’ll recognize this as

Core beliefs and the downward arrow (CBT), schemas (schema therapy). Identifying the deeper belief under the automatic thoughts.

How ARM differs

The intervention is translation and repetition, not debate. Faster, repeatable in the moment, and usable by the client without the clinician present. The end goal is regulation.

All-or-nothing thinking is not a personality trait or a character flaw. It is what the brain does in fight or flight, and it can be retrained.

You’ll recognize this as

All-or-nothing / dichotomous thinking as a cognitive distortion (CBT). A named distortion to identify and restructure.

How ARM differs

CBT treats it as a thinking error to correct through debate. The method treats it as a survival state to retrain through action.

Negative self-talk is not harmless background noise and it is not necessary motivation. It is a threat signal the client is sending themselves all day, and it actively suppresses the brain function they are trying to use.

You’ll recognize this as

Self-compassion (Neff) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (Gilbert). Self-kindness over self-judgement.

How ARM differs

Self-compassion is usually taught as its own practice (exercises, meditations, letters). Here it is one in-the-moment redirect inside a single regulation framework. The purpose of different self talk being regulation often lands more strongly than the idea that being nicer to yourself feels good.

Phase 03 · the behavior

Avoidance and urgency are the two ends of the same pendulum. Both are driven by dysregulation, and both get stronger every time we obey them. This module is about softening both.

You’ll recognize this as

The avoidance-relief cycle / negative reinforcement (behavioral model of anxiety). Avoidance is reinforced because it relieves discomfort, which strengthens future avoidance.

How ARM differs

The difference is the frame: the method reads the discomfort as nervous system dysregulation, a threat response to an ordinary task, not as anxiety symptoms to be managed.

When the brain is dysregulated, it narrows. It zooms in on the immediate, treats small things as huge, scans for where you rank, and loses sight of what actually matters. Every tool in this module is the same move in response: widen the lens back out to reconnect to the clients values, goals and ultimately fulfillment. (A discussion often missed in ADHD work).

You’ll recognize this as

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Somatic Therapy

How ARM differs

ACT uses values to steer clients to where they want to go (hopefully) whereas ARM uses values to reconnect to a grander perspective (fulfillment, five-year outlooks) which acts as a regulatory tool that cues the nervous system that the immediate, micro-stressor is not a life-or-death threat.

A client who has learned multiple tools across many sessions can still feel lost without a map. The job here is to consolidate, not add. Show them the whole picture, hand them the simple summaries, and make sure they trust that they already have what they need. You’ll learn to provide this regulation toolbox as a philosophy and life long solution to things that will inevitably come up. This isn’t the end of working with your client, you now both speak the same language and can return to regulation conversations with whatever they bring up at their next session.

Meet Your Instructor

Jenna Free, therapist for adhd

I help adults with ADHD get out of survival mode, not by adding more to their to-do list, but by helping them regulate their nervous system so their brain can finally work with them, not against them.

I was diagnosed at 32, with two small kids and a calendar that felt impossible to keep up with. Life got bigger than my coping mechanisms. The frantic bursts, the last-minute saves, the inevitable crash. I was managing, until I wasn’t.

Through hundreds of sessions with ADHDers, I realized the problem wasn’t ADHD itself — it was dysregulation. Being a neurodivergent person in a neurotypical world has put us into survival mode but in fight-or-flight, the brain can’t plan, prioritize, or follow through.

That’s where the ADHD Regulation Method™ was born. A practical, compassionate, and evidence-based approach that helps lessen the overwhelm, and increase your enjoyment in life (all while getting more done).

This work

Helps ADHD clients with…

Overwhelm

When you're more regulated overwhelm lessens.

Paralysis

When you're more regulated paralysis lessens (or disappears)

Productivity

When you're more regulated, you'll get more done, more consistently (without more effort).

Energy Levels

When you're more regulated, it will feel like you have more energy because so much isn't being used by being in survival mode.

Consistency

When you're more regulated, you'll be able to show up without needing impending deadlines or urgency.

Enjoyment of life

When you're more regulated, you can be present and enjoy the journey!

"I’ve gone to therapists with specialties in ADHD before, but the standard approach of implementing more timers, tools and planners made me even more stressed and burned out than I already was."

When I discovered your podcast and started learning about the ADHD Regulation Method, I realized very quickly that this was the way to go for me. I searched around for any therapists near me with a similar approach, and I could not find a single option. In the end it worked out great because you offer a broad selection of timeslots for the groups, but I think this is THE way to go for a lot of people with ADHD, if not all of us. I believe having more therapists teaching the Regulation Method would change a lot of patients’ lives for the better.

Questions? Let's get them answered.

Therapists, counselors, social workers, and coaches with ADHD adults on their caseload. It works whether ADHD is your stated specialty or a growing part of a general practice.

Most ADHD trainings give you content about what ADHD is and a set of tools to pull from. ARM gives you structure and depth. You’ll know what you’re doing in session one, session six, and session twelve with every ADHD client, without improvising.

ARM creates a strong foundation for the other work you do with clients. Without a foundation of regulation other strategies are like an umbrella in a hurricane, they can only do so much. Supporting clients out of the storm makes those umbrellas effective and useful again.

The method treats dysregulation, and dysregulation shows up the same way with or without a diagnosis on file. Therapists use ARM with clients who suspect ADHD, clients waiting on an assessment, and clients diagnosed twenty years ago.

If you are unsure if this would be a good fit for you please email Jenna at [email protected]. If you support adults with ADHD regulation work will only be of help.

The program is live. All weekly teaching sessions are live as well as office hours. However, everything is recorded and you will have the replays available to you.

The time commitment is 90 minutes each week for 11 weeks and there are additional office hours available if you have any additional questions. Each week has a short quiz as well to ensure you're feeling confident in what you're learning.

With CCPA the ARM-C program is confirmed for 16 CE credits. It is currently submitted to CPA and ACE (social work). You can also submit it to your registered body to request CECs.
